Know about Andaman Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a stunning union territory of India, are a tropical paradise made up of 572 islands, with 37 of them inhabited. Nestled at the crossroads of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, these islands are about 150 km north of Aceh, Indonesia, and separated from Thailand and Myanmar by the Andaman Sea.

This beautiful territory is divided into two distinct island groups: the Andaman Islands, located to the north of the 10°N parallel, and the Nicobar Islands to the south. The islands are separated by the Ten Degree Channel, which stretches 150 km wide.

The Andaman Sea lies to the east, while the Bay of Bengal is to the west. These island chains are thought to be a submerged extension of the Arakan Mountains, adding to their mystical allure.

The capital of this enchanting territory is Port Blair, and the total land area spans approximately 8,249 km² (3,185 sq mi). The islands are divided into three districts: Nicobar District, with Car Nicobar as its capital; South Andaman District, with Port Blair as its capital; and North and Middle Andaman District, with Mayabunder as its capital.

Home to the Andaman and Nicobar Command, the only tri-service geographical command of the Indian Armed Forces, these islands also harbor the Sentinelese people, an uncontacted tribe known for their isolation. Although traditionally thought to live at a Paleolithic level of technology, recent findings suggest they may have engaged in metalwork, adding to the intrigue of this remarkable region.
