Cellular Jail, popularly known as “Kala Pani”, is not just a prison but a symbol of India’s freedom struggle. This historic prison was built to isolate and torture freedom fighters during the British rule. Completed in 1906, it had 7 wings, each with numerous single cells, where prisoners lived completely alone. Cellular Jail is a place where you can feel the sacrifices made for India’s freedom. It is not just something you read in history books, you will see with your own eyes the cells where the brave revolutionaries were imprisoned alone. Along with this, Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and many other freedom fighters were imprisoned here. Every evening, you will see a living history through the Light & Sound Show. Ross Island (Now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island)
This island was once the administrative headquarters of the British. The ruins of the old British era church, barracks, office buildings, jail and officers’ club still survive on this island. Now it is all covered in green banyan trees, creating a mysterious yet enchanting atmosphere. Peacocks, deer and rabbits are seen all over this island, those who love nature animals can see and take pictures from close up here. In 1943, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the national flag on this island for a short time. Therefore, this island has been named “Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island” after him.
