Mayabandar, a quiet and culturally diverse town in the northern part of Middle Andaman, is located about 242 km by road and 136 km by ferry from Port Blair, Location wise, Mayabunder located 72 km north of Rangat and 79 km south of Diglipur, an ideal midway destination, easily accessible by both road and ferry. It is an offbeat destination that has not yet entered the mainstream of tourism, where instead of artificial crowds, there is the solitude of nature, a touch of history and a unique blend of different cultures. The social structure here has acquired a different character due to the settlement of refugees from Bangladesh and East Pakistan and the Burmese Karen tribes during the British era. The mangrove-fringed coast, secluded beaches like Karmatang and the small islands nearby offer a wonderful experience for offbeat travelers. Although the tourism infrastructure here is limited, Andamans Tour allows you to discover the true nature of Mayabandar with safe transportation, custom guides and local experiences.
Mayabandar is small and peaceful enough to walk around most of the town, but for more distant destinations like Karmatang Beach, local buses are the best option, although it is important to check the times in advance as there are limited daily trips. There are some public jeeps and auto rickshaws, but they are often expensive for non-locals, so it is advisable to check with locals before you go. If you want to visit nearby islands such as Avis Island, Coco Island and Interview Island, it is best to contact local fishermen or ask the staff at your accommodation. Mayabandar has a handful of lovely beaches, seasonal turtle nesting sites and mangrove lined tidal creeks, and is home to the second largest port in the Andamans after Port Blair, where mainland passenger ships stop. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers looking to avoid the crowds, as there are no luxury resorts, and the accommodation is simple but very close to nature. Although the lack of mobile network or internet can create some isolation, once you venture out and spend time at Rampur Beach or German Jetty, or sit on the beach and take some photos, you will realize that this solitude is a kind of gift, where you can rediscover yourself.
Mayabunder is a quiet and peaceful place in Andaman, where nature and the sea coexist. The best time to visit this place is from October to April. During this time, the weather is beautiful, sunny and dry, which is perfect for walking and spending time on the beach. Especially from November to February, the weather is cool (20-28 degrees), and it is during this time that turtles lay their eggs at Karmatang Beach, which is a very wonderful experience. During the rainy season, that is, from June to September, there is more rain and the sea is rough, so it is better not to travel during this time.
There are two main ways to reach Mayabunder, namely by road and by sea. To reach Mayabunder by road, various buses ply daily between 4 am and 11 am along the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR), which passes through Baratang and Rangat. Although this long journey of about 9 to 10 hours is a bit tiring, the experience of crossing the dense jungle and ferry is completely different. You may come across the Jarawa tribesmen on the journey, but remember, taking pictures of them, giving them anything or talking to them is prohibited by law. And for those who prefer a more relaxed journey, there is a passenger ferry from Phoenix Bay Jetty (Port Blair) to Mayabunder via Diglipur twice a week (Monday and Friday), which takes about 8 to 9 hours depending on the weather. Before the journey, be sure to carry a copy of your ID, passport (if you are a foreigner) and the necessary permits, as security checks are carried out at both Port Blair and Mayabunder.
Mayabunder is a peaceful and scenic place in Andaman. There are some great places to visit here. One of them is Karmatang Beach, about 13 km from Mayabunder town. This beach has grey sand, clear water and turtles that lay their eggs in winter, which is an amazing experience. Then there is Avis Island, a small and secluded island. You have to go here by boat. The white sand and blue water here are very beautiful, perfect for a picnic or spending time in peace. Interview Island is another island where wild elephants can be seen in the forest. This is a great place for those who love adventure. However, to go here, you need to take permission in advance and arrange a boat. Ray Hill or Remaya Bazar is a hilly area, where you can camp amidst many plants, bird calls and nature. Mayabunder Jetty is a place where ships arrive from the mainland. Watching the sunset from here is also a very beautiful experience.
Finally, the road from Corbyn’s Cove to Mayabunder Road is also very beautiful. The view of the sea, mangroves, and green hills on both sides of the road makes the journey more enjoyable.
All in all, Mayabunder is an ideal place for those who want to get away from the crowds and spend some time amidst nature.
Mayabandar is not yet a tourist destination, so accommodation options are relatively limited. However, there are a few good options for tourists. The most popular is C N Sand Guest House, which offers basic but clean and spacious rooms. The owners are very friendly and will help you find local attractions. There is a government tourism department resort near the jetty, which has fairly comfortable rooms, although it is mainly for government guests, tourists can also stay if they book in advance.
