Rangat, the second largest city in the Andaman Islands, is still largely unknown to tourists. For those who seek a close touch of nature and want to stay away from the crowds, Rangat is a great place. The city is surrounded by various beaches, with volcanic rocks and sometimes white sand, which are the perfect place to see turtles nesting in the winter (December-January). Rangat itself has India’s longest mangrove walkway, the naturally rich Dhani Nalla Walkway and an environmental awareness center, which is undoubtedly a special attraction for nature lovers. After the monsoon, you can visit the small yet beautiful waterfalls and extensive spice gardens here, where you can find a unique touch of nature. Although there is nothing much inside the city, the local markets, tea shops and simple lifestyle here will fill you with the smell of the earth. The livelihood of the people here mainly revolves around fishing and agriculture. Since there are few tourists, the locals are very sincere and friendly, although they may sometimes charge a little more for their services. All in all, Rangat is an offbeat destination, where there is no crowd, no noise, only the unobstructed greenery of nature, the sound of calm waves, and some quiet moments.
The best time to visit Rangat is during the winter, from December to March. The weather is cool and comfortable during this time, so it is the perfect time to visit the beach, walk the mangroves, or enjoy nature.
However, if you want to see the waterfalls, you can also visit Rangat during the rainy season. The waterfalls look more vibrant and beautiful during this time. Although there may be some mud or difficulty in walking due to the rain, the beauty of nature makes up for it. All in all, you can choose the time to visit Rangat, whether it is winter or monsoon, based on your travel style.
The two main routes to reach Rangamati are by road and by sea. From Port Blair, you can take a government or private bus or a private cab. The government buses depart from Aberdeen Bus Depot and are the most economical option, although it is advisable to book tickets in advance as there are chances of long queues. The journey takes around 7-8 hours. For a more comfortable experience, there are AC/Non-AC private buses, which depart at various times and can be booked in advance. For those who want to travel individually and with family, they can use a cab or taxi. this allows you to travel at your own pace and the driver often acts as a guide.
If you want to go by sea, there are government ferry services from Port Blair and Havelock Island, which operate 4-5 days a week. The ferry arrives at the jetty at Rangamati, which is about 10 km from the main town. Alternatively, you can take a small boat from Long Island across the mangrove canal to reach Yereta Jetty, which is 8 km from the city center.
Once in Ranga, you can use autos, jeeps, or local buses for local transportation. However, the local bus schedule is variable, so it is best to check in advance.
